Two people drive down the same road. One sees a field full of sunflowers. The other sees the roadkill in the gutter. Same journey, very different experience!
Most of us are running on Autopilot, living out habitual patterns of thought and perception. We tend to look for what could go wrong (with the positive intention of managing it) or what could go very, very right. We habitually look for problems or seek solutions. We notice what's missing in our lives, or what's abundantly present. And it is these patterns which determine the quality of our experience, and not (as most people believe) the 'reality' of our current situation.
Our perceptual filters limit our ability to see things as they really are. But make the small effort required to over-ride your Autopilot, and re-focus with purpose on what you most want to see, and pretty soon your Autopilot will be running a brand new programme totally automatically on your behalf. Seek and ye shall find!
So, wherever you are right now, take a few minutes to focus in the direction of what you do want to see in your life. Grab your Travel Log, and make a list of all the good in your current situation. Write about your favourite people, places and experiences. And then, when you are ready for a stretch, make a list of all the things you appreciate about the people you don't get along with quite so well. Add to your list, as inspiration strikes, all day every day!
As your perception expands, the first thing you'll notice is that you feel a whole lot better. But the exciting news is, that is just the beginning...
"Genius means little more than the faculty of perceiving in an unhabitual way." William James
